Veneers

Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They are made from composite or ceramic and are shaped and shaded to sit close against the tooth and resemble natural enamel. Veneers are used at the front of the mouth, where the appearance of a tooth and the way it fits with those beside it are both part of the result.

When veneers are used

Veneers are used for teeth that are discolored in a way whitening does not correct, for teeth that are chipped or worn at the edge, and for small gaps between the front teeth. They can also improve the appearance of teeth that are slightly out of line, although larger alignment problems are better addressed by orthodontic treatment. By covering the front surface, a veneer also protects it from further wear.

Composite and ceramic veneers

• Composite veneers. The material is applied directly to the tooth and shaped in the mouth, then polished. Composite can usually be repaired or adjusted if it chips.
• Ceramic veneers. These are made in a laboratory from an impression or a digital scan and then bonded to the tooth. Ceramic resists staining well and reflects light in a way that is close to natural enamel.

How the treatment works

The dentist first checks that the teeth and gums are healthy and discusses the shape and shade being aimed for. A thin layer of enamel is usually removed so that the veneer sits flush rather than proud of the tooth, and an impression or scan is taken. Ceramic veneers are then made and bonded at a later visit, while composite veneers are built up directly. Because enamel is removed, veneers are considered a lasting commitment for the teeth involved.

Recovery and aftercare

Teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold for a short period after preparation and bonding. Veneers are cleaned like natural teeth, and cleaning between them matters, since the margin where the veneer meets the tooth is where decay can start. A veneer can chip under the same habits that chip enamel, such as biting nails or opening packaging with the teeth.
